#UAlbertaCares: Faculty & Mental Health

#UAlbertaCares: Faculty & Mental Health “Faculty members face a variety of unique stressors that impact our mental wellness. Including competition for grant funds, graduate students, performance in the classroom, our year-over-year assessment which is implicitly in competition with our peers...facing these unknowns can be very challenging and very stressful”
- Dr. Ivan Fair (Professor & Chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering)

We aim to support a culture shift surrounding the mental health of faculty in academia. In an area where there is often fierce competition between peers and time off work is considered a hindrance, accessing resources for mental wellness is often taboo. Students hope the faculty and institutions which view this video begin to assess their contribution to this culture, renew their commitment to collegiality and avail themselves of the resources identified in this videos to help support their--and their colleagues’--mental wellness.
- Arjun Khabra, 4th year Biology student in the Faculty of Science

The #UAlbertaCares vodcast series on mental health was created by students in Peter Lougheed Leadership College course INT D 301 Foundations of Leadership. Working with a professional production team, students connected with stakeholders across the U of A campuses to create a video series to highlight mental health strategies for undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty, and to catalyze discussion about the diverse challenges and specific resources for each group.

The project is supported by partners including: ATB Financial, Brian and Cecile Silzer, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Community Social Work Team, and the University of Alberta Alumni Association.
