The Joker is back and this time he’s, well, kinda serious. The new Joker movie is an origin story that shows the villain’s humble, human roots, but will certainly draw on all the character’s past iterations to create the new, down-to-earth villain.
Joaquin Phoenix’s villain will be indebted to many movies (and comics) but none more than Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight, a role that blew open the possibilities for what a superhero movie could be. There are also similarities with the campy 60s Joker played Cesar Romero, whose cheesy side will definitely be present in Phoenix’s portrayal. Any serious Joker will likely bear a resemblance to Jack Nicholson’s from 1989, who brought the character more towards seriousness. The animated Mark Hamill joker will probably make its influence known through that iconic laugh. As for Jared Leto’s version, well, it’s probably best left in the past.
