Fly plague causes health problems in Karachi

Fly plague causes health problems in Karachi (10 Sep 2019) The recent invasion of flies and mosquitoes in Karachi has doubled the number of child patients in the southern port city, Pakistani authorities say.

Monsoon rains have left behind puddles of stagnant water in the streets of the city, which has led to increased mosquito breeding.

And piles of garbage left on the streets due to mismanaged cleanup by city workers have led to greater numbers of flies.

According to Professor Jamal Raza, the director of the National Institute of Child Health, flies are passing infections from one place to another, resulting in an uptick of cases of diarrhoea, abdominal pain and upper respiratory infections.

Karachi has experienced an unprecedented invasion of the bothersome insects, making life uncomfortable for locals.

Resident Abdul Rehman said the bugs are a major nuisance in homes and restaurants.

Unsanitary conditions linked to the improper disposal of sewage and garbage have remained a political problem in Karachi for many years.

Following heavy criticism, the city administration recently carried out fumigation to tackle the swarms of flies and mosquitoes.
