Let's take a look at the invention of the Electric Iron. Right from venturing into Mars to ironing clothes, science has a lot many contributions to our lives. Well, now that we have initiated the conversation about the ironing of clothes, we might as well talk about another simple yet important invention. Let’s know about the story behind the invention of Electric Iron.
This concept of ironing of clothes has been done by the people from great any years. During 1st Century BC, in China, people used to iron clothes using a cooking pan and putting colas inside it. Gradually the pans were replaced by iron slabs. Also, Smoothing Stones were used around the 8th and 9th century and are known as the earliest irons. They were mushroom shaped stones. During the Industrial Revolution, i.e. in the late 17th Century, triangular iron made of solid iron, also known as Sadirons were used for ironing. But the shortcoming of this device was the excessive time used to heat the charcoals and the heaviness of the iron. Instead of Charcoal liquid fuels such as kerosene, ethanol, whale oil, natural gas & even gasoline were utilized to heat the irons but they were not very user-friendly and were unsafe too. And in our country, coconut shells were used for the same, which was a concept that originated in Kerela.
Looking at these shortcomings it's obvious that many scientists would have worked to shun them & on June 6, 1882, Henry W. Seely, invented and patented the electric iron. In this iron, the body of the iron was heated with the help of a carbon arc. And because there was no thermostat at that point in time these electric irons were considered unsafe. Finally, in 1892, hand irons using electrical resistance were introduced by Crompton and Co. and the General Electric Company, allowing for the regulation of the iron’s heat. And then began the use of electric iron in homes.
But still, after this invention people were using coal irons for many years.
