A pair of horses, one of them a pregnant shetland pony, sought sanctuary at a gym after being callously dumped on a busy dual carriageway. The lost horses wandered into the car park at Nuffield Gym in Chislehurst, southeast London, after stunned motorists spotted them running along the busy A20 bypass. Staff ushered the confused horses to grassy field surrounding the gym’s tennis courts before calling the RSPCA. Gym workers then gave the animals apples and water and they happily munched grass while awaiting rescue. A receptionist at the gym said: “They were just running loose along the road. "Then they came into the car park and we put them in a safe area and taped it off to stop them escaping. “We think they were dumped and the pony is pregnant. "They are beautiful horses and it seems a shame they were abandoned on a busy road - it could have caused a terrible accident. “At least they are safe for now. They are very tame and staff have been hand-feeding them apples. “I hope someone gives them a good home.” Horses are regularly being "fly-tipped" and left to die by irresponsible owners, the RSPCA has said. The charity said the problem was partly that horses were cheap to buy but expensive to maintain, especially if they needed veterinary care. It said prosecution cases involving horses had risen by 25% since 2015.
