This 49K Mile 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata May Be The Most Perfect Sports Car Ever Made

This 49K Mile 1991 Mazda MX-5 Miata May Be The Most Perfect Sports Car Ever Made I did not always love Miatas. When the came out in late 1989, my friends and I were all about American Muscle and quarter mile times - the idea of a low horsepower "momentum car" was just not something we would be in to. We threw the same old jokes at them - "hairdresser's car" and such. Boy, were we wrong. Now, we all have SCCA prepared Spec Miatas and race them regularly. Not one of us doesn't regret taking a different path back then, and missing out on 20 years of road racing.

Not only was the NA Miata one of the most lovingly designed and produced cars of all time, it may well be the most perfect sports car ever made - light, nimble, perfectly balanced, incredibly rewarding to drive, and attractive to look at. By cosmetically emulating the Lotus Elan, the Miata was a genuine pioneer in the retro craze, something thought of when it came out. But while the Beetle was all about being retro, the Miata was far more about driving.
