Facilitating classroom discussion by pairs of students A short video illustrating the type of focused discussion that begins immediately when a technique involving a take-home midterm is used in which students "score" example essays and then are assigned to convince another student of their scoring. Scoring is done numerically using a detailed rubric "checklist" as a take-home work. The results are collected and discussion groups of two students are immediately formed by the instructor such that students with widely disparate grade results are paired. After 25 minutes of discussion each student writes a summary of how the discussion changed or did not change their scorings. The effort improves student's essay work leading to revisions in their own writings. See more about this class at
