Solid tie patterns go with anything - if you're new to suits, stick with those for now.
Next would be striped ties: They can be anything from formal to casual, and work with most shirts. Only important rule: Don't combine narrow stripes with narrow stripes! A narrow striped tie needs a solid or wide striped shirt.
Regimental striped ties are extra fancy and traditional, but can be really cool and elevate your style. Stick with more traditional, subtle colors for formal occasions.
Paisley ties are awesome and can be a great eye-catcher, even in a somewhat formal setting. As long as the colors are classy and the design isn't too loud or bright, these are great if you want to look a little more unique in the office. Skip this one for very formal events.
Plaid is another not-so-common design that can make you stand out if worn correctly - with solid or narrow-striped shirts. Plaid ties can also be a little too much for the office if you pick a loud color combination, but can be perfectly fine for business in subtle tones like darker blue, grey, brown, or even dark reds.
Polka dots and pin dots are a little less traditional, like Paisley ties, but are still perfectly acceptable in business dress codes. Same rule as for stripes: Don't even mix narrow dots with narrow stripes!
