Spirituality and Virtues - Forgiveness: Thinking About It | #ChinmayaMission Forgiveness is letting go of pain. When somebody hurts us and we feel betrayed, violated, cheated or that some injustice has been done to us, the pain really stays with us. The pain sometimes goes so deep that it even gets stored within our body. We could then revisit that hurtful incident again and again and relive that pain. Sometimes, each time we revisit it, it is even more painful. Alternatively, people may feel it’s gone and they’re not actively always thinking about it. However, it’s always there as background noise, making them very skeptical and hesitant, or bitter and sarcastic. Therefore, forgiveness is to let go of that pain and be free from it. The other party, the person who had hurt us, may have happily moved on in life and completely forgotten it all and is unaffected. But we’re still stuck with that feeling and are not able to be light, to be happy and to be trusting. The hurt that we experience programs us to be a certain way. Forgiveness helps delete our programming from that particular incident so that we can approach life a bit more freely, a bit more fresh, a bit more open-minded. Forgiveness lightens our hearts and sets us free from all the horribleness that we experienced. It actually has very little to do with the other person.
