So,What Have We Learnt

So,What Have We Learnt "So, What Have We Learnt"
Here's a song I made in November 2019

The captain he was telling us that everything was fine
And we were sharply falling just take a safer line
So, I went back to the movie, It Was a Wonderful Life
And sent a final message to the kids and to the wife
I thought of Jimmy Stewart talking to his big white friend
The rabbit sitting next to me said “Well, I guess this is the end”

There’s a crack in the window that let’s the wind blow through
And every time I shiver it makes me think of you
Thinking of a different path that I never took
Thinking of the last page that you ripped out of the book
They say that life is suffering, and I guess that they should know
But I have lived and suffered and now I’ve nothing left to show

So, what have we learnt?
That the hands on the clock will just turn
There is no warmth in the winter sun
And there is so much left undone
What you lose will not be returned
So, what have we learnt?

Little Napoleon adjusted his hat
Threw his gun into the river and said “Well, that’s enough of that,
Boys, from tomorrow I will be a different man
Just like my mother hoped I’d be when we left Spokane
I’ve become King Lear, lost and raging on the heath
And I ask you please write this on my wreath

So, what have we learnt?
How you lived is not what you earned
But there is no warmth in the winter sun
And there is so much left undone
What you lose cannot be returned
So, what have we learnt?

Walking down the city streets you think you know so well
Then one day they tear it down and so it breaks the spell
You wonder if you’ve wasted the only gift that you received
And the one lie that they told you was the one that you believed
And now it’s too late to go back to the start
So, pour a drink, just sit back and watch as the world falls apart

So, what have we learnt?
Old letters so easily burn
There is no warmth in the winter sun
And you have left so much undone
What you lose cannot be returned
So, what have we learnt?

Learnt
