Do not bother buying dog food. It is very expensive and the strays are not used to it. They won't eat it at all. If possible, find out what food they usually eat. For example, if there are many tea shops around, they will definitely eat biscuits or cakes. See if some other local people feed them anything.
But if you cannot find out anything about their daily habits, you have to experiment. Here are some of your options (these are all from my experience of feeding random stray dogs):
Biscuits. Buy a small parle-g packet. Offer 1 and see if they eat it. If the dog seems disinterested, pretend you do not have anything else and start to walk away. Chances are, he will realize he is not getting anything better, and eat it anyway.
Bread
Roti/chapati. Not stale.
Eggs. This is a bit expensive, but I have never met a dog who doesn't like boiled eggs.
Milk. A small container is required for this.
Cooked Rice mixed with chicken/mutton/fish gravy. People who take care of stray dogs usually feed them lots of rice as it is quite cheap. My indie dog even ate rice with daal or papaya curry. You can offer them a little and see if they eat it.
Dogs are clever beings. There is a very real possibilty that they reject your food because they have higher expectations from you. Since you gave them chicken bones (kfc, no less), they won't accept anything less.
Lastly, I would like to thank you for being one of the very few people who care for stray dogs. There aren't many people like you.
