READ ALONG TO PRACTICE YOUR ENGLISH AND TO LEARN THE MEANING OF GROWING LIKE A WEED: Sometimes in your lawn you have these kind of plants which are called weeds. Weeds are things that grow where you don't want them to. But we have a phrase in English, "growing like a weed", that we use to describe children who grow really, really quickly. So you might be visiting your relatives and maybe you haven't seen your nephew for a long time and he's a lot taller all of the sudden. You would say, "Wow! You are growing like a weed!" Basically saying you have grown really, really quickly. When I was young I grew somewhat slowly until I was about 13 and then I definitely, for a while there, I was growing like a weed. So you can use this to describe children when they are growing really, really quickly. I'm sure some of you, when you were young, were growing like weeds.
So if we were to use this in the past we would say, "When I was young I grew like a weed." If I was to use it in the present I tense I would say that, "Right now my son in particular, is growing like a weed." And if I was to use it in the future I would that someday when I have grandkids maybe I'm sure that the grandkids will grow like weeds. Or I think they are going to grow like weeds. So when you say someone is growing like a weed it means that they're growing really, really quickly.
