Geoffrey Stone: Constitutional Scholar

One of the most brilliant constitutional scholars in the United States is interviewed on “Freethought Matters” this week. Geoffrey Stone is the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. Stone joined the faculty after serving as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. He has served as the dean of his Law School and university provost. Stone is the author of many books on constitutional law, including "The Free Speech Century" and "Sex and the Constitution: Sex, Religion and Law from America’s Origins to the Twenty-First Century."

“The nation was founded at the time of the Enlightenment, and most Enlightenment thinkers were rather skeptical, indeed often hostile, to the traditional views of Christianity,” Stone says on the show. “Among the American Founders, people like Jefferson and Franklin lived in a world in which there was a lot of skepticism about that.” Learn more about the Freedom From Religion Foundation at ffrf.org.
