GB ignores 1975 debacle in explaining Jehovah's Witnesses numbers decrease (Franz freedom 108) [thumbnail pic: the faithful horse Boxer, in George Orwell's "Animal Farm". Boxer would rather work himself to death than admit his ruler could be wrong] Ray Franz, a member of the Watchtower Governing Body during their crisis period 1975 to 1980, recounts the reaction of the Society's leadership to the significant drop in numbers and activity subsequent to the passing of 1975. Rather than take responsibility for the problem they had created by their emphasis on a date, the Governing Body predictably retreated to its habitual "beating" of the brethren. The solution to decreased numbers, plainly, was increased the emphasis on preaching -- and return to using the traditional proof-texts which justify such emphasis.
