In this artist tone series lesson, we will take an in-depth look at David Gilmour's iconic solo tone heard on "Comfortably Numb".

If you have one of the Line 6 Helix series of processors (Helix, Helix Rack, Helix LT or Helix Native), feel free to click the link below to download this preset.

Even if you don't have a Helix processor, this tutorial will give you a good run down of the types of amps and effects that David Gilmour used to create this stunning guitar tone. So using your own modeling processor or real live amps and effects should be relatively straight forward.

I will talk in-depth about not only the high headroom amps that David Gilmour prefers, but also the multiple gain pedals to push the amp through and his delicate use of a rotary speaker.

There is also the consideration that not everything you are hearing on the record is actually part of Gilmour's signal chain. Instead, some effects are added in post production but will need to be added to the signal chain in order to recreate what you are hearing on the original recording.

Have fun with this one guys. This tone is a classic and a lot of fun to play with.
