UK MPs pass further amendment aimed at preventing future PM suspending Parliament

UK MPs pass further amendment aimed at preventing future PM suspending Parliament UK MPs have passed a further amendment aimed at preventing a future Prime Minister from suspending Parliament in order to achieve a no-deal Brexit. The vote saw the resignation of one Government minister, with several other Cabinet members abstaining.

The cross-party amendment passed by 41 votes - significantly more than a previous, similar amendment, which scraped through by a margin of just one vote.

Culture, media and sport minister Margot James resigned from her post in order to support the measure. Mrs A number of other senior ministers did not vote - among them were Chancellor, Philip Hammond, and International Development Secretary Rory Stewart.

The UK press quotes a spokeperson for the Prime Minister saying that Theresa May was "disappointed" that a number of ministers failed to vote, adding her successor will "take this into account" when forming their government.

The favourite to become Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has not ruled out suspending Parliament in order to bring about a no-deal Brexit.

Meanwhile, his rival, Jeremy Hunt, has apologised for failing to vote, saying this was an accident. Mr Hunt has previously ruled out suspending Parliament - but says he opposes today's attempt to, in his words, "restrict the hands of an incoming Government".
