All is vanity, says the Book of Ecclesiastes. But, what does "all is vanity" mean? Today, vanity has taken on a different connotation, so Dr. Brant Pitre, in The Mass Readings Explained, goes through the Old Testament Reading for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time from the Book of Ecclesiastes.
In this video, Dr. Pitre will discuss the anxiety that accompanies things such as riches and wealth, and that at the end of the day, because of the fleetingness of life and that whatever we accrue will ultimately end up as someone else's, all is vanity, according to Ecclesiastes.
This is paralleled with the Gospel reading for the 18th Sunday, in which the Rich Fool piles up barns of resources so that he can take rest and be merry, giving into the vices of sloth and gluttony, when his life will be taken from him that very day and an account will have to be made for all of his acquisitions before his judge.
