Firefighters attempted to contain large oily substance in Little Lake Marina

Firefighters attempted to contain large oily substance in Little Lake Marina Just after 10:30p.m. Firefighters responded to the Peterborough Marina located at Del Crary Park after reports of a large oil slick around the docks. Firefighters arrived and after speaking with some fishermen and people who were staying on boats at the marina they learnt that the oil was first seen between 5p.m. and 7p.m. but the bystanders became concerned later on in the night when they seen it spreading. Firefighters located the source of the sheen coming from three storm drains, firefighters immediately placed absorbing booms around those drains. Firefighters and the city’s environmental services brought in boxes of absorbing booms, firefighters then launched a boat to be able to close off the marina by pulling a boom from the wharf to the farthest dock to contain more of the substances escaping into Little Lake.

This is somewhat the same incident that occurred in March 2018 when an oily sheen was discovered in the marina, the substance was contained and an a lengthy cleanup took place. The oily substance was identified as petroleum products from GE.

The Ministry of the Environment has been contacted and is responding to assist in the cleanup and to determine where the substance is coming from.
